Acne comes n many forms, Below is a short definition of the types of acne as acne is not just huge zits, but can appear as white dots under the skin at the other extreme.
Comedo
A Comedo is a sebaceous hair follicle blocked with sebum, which consists of dead cells from inside the sebaceous hair follicle and other tiny hairs. If you are unlucky bacteria adds itself to this mix and the acne progressees to a more serious form.
Blackhead
When a comedo is open the top layer picks up dirt and looks black. This is a blackhead and is a mild form of acne.
Whitehead
Whiteheads are plugs of sebum but not in a hair follicle. They have no way out and should only be removed under medical supervision. The alternative is to wait for them to just slowly push thier way through the skin and fall off. They are normally very small and can appear on the face and neck/shoulders as you get older. Up tp 40% of middle aged people have acne but do not link the white bumps to it.
Squeezing either black or whiteheads can force the infection deep into the skin making maters much worse. Leave them alone unless you get them removed under sterile conditions.
Papule
A Papule is normally a small solid lesion which is very slightly elevated bove the skin. The skin may have a sort of sandpaper feel to it.
The problem is caused by localised cellular reaction to Acne.
Pustules
Pustules are often a dome shaped soft lesion filled with pus and what we normally associate with Acne. It is a mixture of bacteria, white blood cells which are fighting the bacteria and dead skin cells. Many Acne Pustules have hairs in the middle. If the pustule heals up with no further problems then there is little danger of scarring. Squeezing the zit runs the risk ot scarring and further problems.
Nodules and Cysts
Both of these types of acne are very severe and need specialist treatment. They can occur together in a severe form of acne callled nodulocystic.
